Mid-September mornings start near 40 and the afternoon can reach 70. You do not need two outfits for that, you need three layers you can add and drop as the day moves. |
|
Three Layers, One Pack, and a Day That Fits Both
Start cold. If you are comfortable at the trailhead, you are overdressed by the first climb. Move the heat out. A wool or synthetic base layer keeps sweat off your skin, so the 40 degree morning does not follow you into the shade. Carry the other two. A fleece or light puffy handles the cold half of the day, and a shell handles wind and rain. Cover the edges. A warm hat and thin gloves weigh almost nothing and do most of the work in the first hour.
