Fascinating Facts About the Galápagos Islands

When Charles Darwin visited the Galápagos Islands in 1835 to observe the local flora and fauna, he soon became fascinated by the physical variations of the archipelago's endemic island species.

Through his observations, Darwin hypothesized that species change over time in order to adapt to their environment, which led to the theory of evolution by natural selection. To honor his special relationship with the Galápagos, a statue of the famous naturalist has been erected on the island of San Cristóbal.
