Dear Friends,

At sun down on Friday, many of us will begin celebrating Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish new year. I know I'm not the only one hoping for a sweeter year to come!

Whether or not you're planning a holiday menu, autumn is just around the corner. These recipes are perfect for cooler days ahead.

I've also included two delicious African-inspired dishes to spice up your fall season.

Looking for more Rosh Hashanah ideas? Check out my pages for Rosh Hashanah Recipes and Crafts. Shana tova!
ROSH HASHANAH SANGRIA - It wouldn't be the High Holidays without a cold pitcher of my Rosh Hashanah Sangria! Celebrate the Jewish new year with this sweetly symbolic beverage, featuring several traditional holiday ingredients. A sweet drink for a sweet new year. RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
WEST AFRICAN BRISKET - You may have cooked brisket before, but chances are you've never made it quite like this. This recipe comes from the kitchen of my friend Michael Twitty, a culinary historian and author of The Cooking Gene. His dish combines the Jewish holiday tradition of brisket with a blend of African-inspired spices and ingredients. RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
AUTUMN SWEET POTATO SOUP - Whenever we feel the first hint of fall in the air, I return to this African-inspired recipe. It's healthy, vegan, and gluten free with an unexpected flavorful twist– a creamy touch of peanut butter. It can be made as a smooth silky puree, or with vegetable chunks for more texture. Prepared either way, it's one of my favorite soups. RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
JEWELED BLACK RICE SALAD - For the upcoming holiday season, my recipe development has focused on easy, make-ahead recipe choices and plant-based options. This gorgeous salad checks all the boxes. It's flavorful, nourishing, and so beautiful on the holiday table. RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
VEGAN HOPPIN' JOHN - When you eat black-eyed peas at the Rosh Hashanah Seder, you are inviting wealth and good fortune in the coming year. This smoky, satisfying meatless version of the Southern classic makes a tasty and filling side dish or entree. And who knows? Maybe it will bring you some luck as you ring in the new year - most of us could use some right about now! RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
AUNT BEV'S VEGETARIAN CHOPPED LIVER - This meat-free recipe truly mimics the flavor of chopped liver. It includes whole food ingredients – nothing processed. With a healthy blend of sautéed onions, hard boiled eggs, peas, and walnuts, what's not to love? RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
HONEY APPLE CAKE - Apples and honey are symbolic Rosh Hashanah foods. Why not combine those two flavors into one moist, flavorful dessert cake? This recipe is our family's annual holiday cake, and it's become a tradition for many other families, too! RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
