All Treats: UNICEF Halloween Fundraiser Celebrates 75 Years and Nearly $200M Raised
Courtesy of UNICEF USA
If you spot trick-or-treaters tonight carrying little orange boxes, they're likely up to something even sweeter than just candy collecting. Along with filling their bags with treats, many kids will be participating in the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign to raise funds for health, nutrition, education, and emergency response programs worldwide. This year, the Halloween fundraiser is celebrating its 75th anniversary, making it the longest-running youth engagement campaign in the United States. Over the years, those little boxes have done some serious good, helping raise nearly $200 million for the children's fund. Today, kids are soliciting donations with online fundraisers and going door-to-door with boxes featuring QR codes (not decorated milk cartons as they did in the 1950s), but the heart of the program remains the same. "As we celebrate this landmark anniversary, we're reminded that the youngest voices often inspire the greatest change," UNICEF USA President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis said in a statement. Want to get in on the cause? You can still download a printable QR code to collect donations and add extra meaning to your kiddo's candy haul.

Chuck Norris Swears This Is the Key to Healthy Aging
Yes, Chuck Norris is best known for his acting and martial arts chops, but he also has some advice when it comes to graceful aging. At 85, he has more energy than most people his age, and even those decades younger. He found his key to healthy aging — and it was by going against some of the most popular advice out there. Curious about Norris' approach? He shares his entire method in this 15-minute video explaining the three "internal enemies" wrecking our health as we age and the simple ways we can combat them using foods and herbs you probably already have at home. On this All Hallows' Eve, we're getting into the spooky spirit with nothing other than a ghost story. It goes back to a dark and foggy night in 1807 when a boat called the Schooner Charles veered off course en route from Boston to Portland, Maine, and struck a rocky ledge on the coast of Richmond Island. Devastatingly, 16 of the 22 passengers were killed, including bride-to-be Lydia Carter, whose spirit, some say, still lingers on the shore. Over the years, numerous sightings have been reported at a nearby resort where guests and staff have described eerie encounters with Lydia's ghost. Some even say they've seen her walking along Crescent Beach — the very place her body washed ashore — wearing white and leaving footprints in the sand. So the question is ... would you dare visit Crescent Beach after dark? If so, then you may want to consider adding Maine to your travel list, as well as one of these ghost towns.

Pumpkins' Journey From Ancient Food Staple to Spicy Fall Obsession Spans Thousands of Years

This article was written by Shelley Mitchell, a senior extension specialist, horticulture and landscape architecture, at Oklahoma State University, for The Conversation. October in much of the U.S. brings cooler weather, vibrant fall colors and, of course, pumpkin-spiced everything. This is peak pumpkin season, with most of the American pumpkin crop harvested in October. While people often picture pumpkins as bright orange, they actually come in a wide range of colors, including red, yellow, white, blue, and even green. They vary in size and texture too: Some are smooth, others warty. They can even be miniature or giant. The word "pumpkin" comes from the Greek word "peopon," meaning "large melon." Botanically, pumpkins are fruits because they contain seeds, and they belong to the squash family, Cucurbitaceae. This family also includes cucumbers, zucchini, and gourds. Pumpkins are grown for many purposes: food, seasonal decorating, carving for Halloween, and even giant pumpkin contests. Dive deep into thousands of years of pumpkin history.

Inspiring Story
Scary kind
The Bullocks family in Kentucky is the type to go all out for holidays — but that almost changed when Cole, the youngest of the three brothers, died last Halloween. Instead of letting the decorations collect dust, the family decided to keep Cole's memory alive and put on a volunteer-run haunted house that doubles as a fundraiser for Operation Santa. "I was gonna quit Halloween," said older brother Cam. "But got the opportunity to do this, and my love and passion for it all came back."
