When it was built at the height of the Great Depression, the Hoover Dam was the largest concrete structure in the world.

Although it has since been surpassed by larger dams, the construction of the Hoover Dam marked the beginning of the mega-dam era. It took an army of more than 21,000 workers to complete the dam on the Arizona-Nevada border, but it was finished in 1936, two years ahead of schedule. The project, which diverted the Colorado River through four tunnels, now produces enough hydroelectricity to power more than 1.5 million homes, and cities such as Las Vegas and Phoenix owe much of their growth to the Hoover Dam.
