To preserve its tranquil atmosphere, cars are banned, though local businesses are allowed a truck if they need one, which is good news for overnighters carrying luggage. Most of the island is protected as a nature preserve, and there are miles of scenic trails that wind through forests and meadows. They lead to isolated headlands and coves, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Sunrises and sunsets are spectacular, and the island is even located far enough north that you might catch a glimpse of the northern lights. Wildlife is another draw for tourists — it's common to see harbor seals, migratory birds, and sometimes even whales.
