Evidence suggests that people have been seeking refuge of some kind or another here since well before the 1940s — there are inscriptions inside that date back to the Tang Dynasty (618 to 906 CE). Of course, in cave time, that's basically a minute ago: The presumed age of the site is somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 million years.
