Pope Francis was once a bouncer at a nightclub.
However strange it may be to think of popes having day jobs outside the church, some of them did — including Pope Francis, who was once a bouncer at a nightclub. Long before he assumed the papacy in 2013 after his predecessor, Benedict XVI, became the first pope to resign in nearly six centuries, the future leader of the Catholic Church helped keep the peace at a bar in his hometown of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It wasn't his only odd job, as he also swept floors and worked in a chemical lab. These humble beginnings may help explain why the "People's Pope" is known for his humility and modesty, especially compared to his flashier predecessor.

Born on December 17, 1936, Francis joined the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1958 and is said to have been inspired to do so after recovering from a life-threatening lung infection that required one lung to be removed. He became a Catholic priest in 1969, the archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and a cardinal in 2001. His unique papal name is in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, whom he chose because he has "a special place in his heart and his ministry for the poor, for the disenfranchised, for those living on the fringes and facing injustice," according to a Vatican spokesperson. He is the first pope to choose the name Francis.

Did You Know? It once took three years to elect a new pope.
Papal conclaves are serious business, with the College of Cardinals convening to name a new leader of the Catholic Church whenever the need arises. It now usually takes about a month for white smoke (fumata bianca) to emerge from the Sistine Chapel, signifying that a new pope has been chosen, but it once took just under three years. That particular election took place in Viterbo, Italy, between 1268 and 1271, more than 200 years before the Sistine Chapel was even built. The cardinals just couldn't decide on a successor to Clement IV, although they eventually picked Gregory X — but not before the townspeople got so angry and impatient they tore the roof off the building the cardinals were staying in.
