The stunningly pink Lake Hillier sits on Middle Island, part of a nationally protected reserve on an archipelago off the coast of Western Australia. Its color is likely a result of micro-algaes, such as Dunaliella salina, that thrive in the lake's salty water. These microorganisms produce beta-carotene, a pigment found in carrots, which is believed to be the cause of the lake's unforgettably pink hue. |
