Europe sits on the western side of the strait, which connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean. On the other side is Asia, where a significant portion of Istanbul's urban area lies. Formerly called Constantinople, Istanbul was once the capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and the Ottoman Empires, thanks to this strategic location.
