Dear Friends,

Below I've shared some recipes that will help us transition from spring to summer - light, simple, and seasonal. I've also included a soup recipe from my dear friend Michael Twitty, a culinary historian, community scholar, and living history interpreter focused on African American food and folk culture. Michael is a James Beard award-winning author. His book, The Cooking Gene, is a must read. If you haven't yet had the pleasure, be sure to grab yourself a copy.

THE SECRET HISTORY OF OKRA: OKRA SOUP - Here is a peppery, historically inspired recipe from my friend Michael Twitty, author of The Cooking Gene. This simple heirloom recipe has a few modern updates. The culinary trinity of hot pepper, tomato, and okra served with rice reinforce this soup's connection to similar dishes found from Senegal to Angola, and Philadelphia to Bahia. RECIPE AND HISTORY HERE or PIN IT for later.
HOW TO ROAST ASPARAGUS - My favorite way to prepare asparagus is oven roasting. This method is so simple and so delicious! The roasting gives the tips of the asparagus a salty crunch and makes the stem melt-in-your-mouth tender. If you don't normally enjoy the flavor of this wonderful vegetable, I dare you to try it this way. You might just change your mind. RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
JULIA CHILD'S EASY BLENDER HOLLANDAISE - Looking to top that roasted asparagus with something luscious? If you've ever made hollandaise from scratch before, you'll know what a pain it can be. Separation can easily occur, making the sauce a flop. Luckily, Julia Child and friends have given us a much easier method using an electric blender! RECIPE AND VIDEO HERE or PIN IT for later.
STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE - Strawberry Rhubarb Pie tastes like summer to me. The lemony tartness of rhubarb plays wonderfully with the sweetness of ripe strawberries. It's a magical pairing. The markets are teeming with ripe red strawberries now, and rhubarb is only available for a few months out of the year. If you're going to bake a strawberry rhubarb pie, now is the time. RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
RHUBARB ROSEWATER MARGARITA - A refreshing margarita made with homemade rhubarb syrup and just a hint of an exotic floral finish. This would be just as nice served as a mocktail mixed with soda water in place of of tequila. RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
MIDDLE EASTERN TOMATO GARLIC FISH - This fish recipe is my take on a Sephardic-style fish preparation that has been in my husband's family for generations and it's super easy to make. It only takes about 30 minutes to prep and cook. The sauce is mildly spicy and slightly sweet, with a wonderful garlicky flavor. RECIPE HERE or PIN IT for later.
